Almost every year, there’s at least one short in this category that’s one of the worst films nominated overall in its year by the Academy. Thankfully, that’s not the case this year, as all five of the nominated shorts have at least some element worthy of recognition, regardless of their total quality.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS boils the book down to an underdeveloped romance between a mean lady in hideous dresses & a horrible handsome guy who can't stop doing ASMR. Alison Oliver is the only actor making exciting choices. Costumes are distracting vulgarities. Stunning cinematography. Fennell’s best yet!

10 Movies to Stream for Black History Month

Not only is it Black History Month. It’s also its 100th anniversary!!

To commemorate its centennial, I wrote a list of 10 Black films, one from each of the last 10 decades, to stream.

Living it up tonight with a frozen pizza, a j*int, and Frankenhooker

JOSEPHINE is one of the most difficult movies I've ever watched. One repeated directorial flourish is brilliant. The script's psychological insight is truthful & tough. Tatum is sturdy, Mason Reeves is a great discovery. And I kinda don't ever wanna think about any of it again.

Really adored THEYDREAM, which uses a cornucopia of different mixed media and animation styles to bring the director's childhood and family memories to vibrant life. Gorgeous to look at, emotionally effective, and some really charming miniatures and models!

JARIPEO is a totally original, boldly constructed documentary about the queer folk who inhabit the masculine rodeo scene in Michoacán, Mexico. Focuses on their anecdotal experiences, using filmmaking flourishes to visualize their thoughts and testimonies in imaginative ways.

FILIPIÑANA digs into the unnatural evil that is the existence of golf courses, investigating their class disparities and environmental destruction with style. Really well shot and effectively paced, with a quiet dread hiding underneath its cheery, colorful exterior.

TELL ME EVERYTHING explores a thorny perspective from the AIDS epidemic in the 80s - those that overreacted and took all the wrong actions. It's beautifully shot, but ultimately feels half-baked and unsatisfying.

Kinda shocked to be saying this given what happens in the movie, but knowing what Sam Raimi is capable of, SEND HELP feels strangely restrained. But wow I had fun. Rachel McAdams, you certified freak you. Dylan O'Brien good at weird mouth sounds. Love being in a vocally squeamish audience.

In both the story it tells and its very existence, the illegally-made Iranian film THE FRIEND'S HOUSE IS HERE represents an act of beautifully constructed and inspiring defiance. A moving ode to the necessity, ability, and liberating power of community. Look at what art can do!

I'm always down for a spontaneous dance sequence and I love magical realism...but I couldn't get myself fully attached to HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY! Rinko Kikuchi is great as a grieving woman who keeps making (somewhat) understandably frustrating choices.

As with most road trip movies, I found HOT WATER pretty naturally compelling. A lovely little mother-son story, with a marvelous performance by Lubna Azabal as a delightfully imperfect mom dealing with a troubled son & a recently-kicked nicotine habit. Funny, well-paced, sweet.
