And if you're using a decent editor with tooling, things work out pretty nicely with TypeScript! Been writing a VSCode plugin using TypeScript lately and so much of it is very low friction.

When Ultima Online (UO) stopped being cautious about banning griefers, our population doubled. A very small number of users (< 0.1%) were throttling our growth. The vast majority of people just don't want to spend their idle time in a shitty place.
