We’d be doing our members a signal service but also, we’d be doing casting people a service too! They wouldn’t have to weed through 1,000s of submissions — I’ve heard horror stories from casting directors — and we’d each get more opportunities, more efficiently.

I’ve heard the same reasons you have about iActor, but I don’t buy them as a final answer, and I’d like that to change. Why not find a way to develop that so it’s useful and can save you money?

Why? Why should this be? The SAG-AFTRA website has a database in place (iActor) where we can guarantee that only union actors are seen. I’ve been in this business for decades and I can count on the fingers on my feet how many times I’ve received an inquiry through that.

But lookit: for that $1,000, we have to compete with non-union actors, and our brethren and sisteren who submit in bulk to any job, even jobs they are automatically typed out of.

For instance, you and I could spend upwards of $1,000 annually to get access to casting calls, usually duplicative, across the various casting billboards like Casting Networks, Actors Access, Backstage and so on. And it’s nice that the union can find our discounts on these amounts.

Seeing this in black and white, it becomes pretty clear why SAG-AFTRA is hobbled in any attempts to find us work.

My focus in this campaign is to find ways that SAG-AFTRA can help us help ourselves.
