The opening chorus is in the form of a prelude and fugue; both sections are marked by distinctive chains of suspensions. The soprano aria "Wie zittern und wanken" is among the most extraordinary in the repertoire.

The opening movement is a chorale fantasia on the Lutheran hymn "Christe, du Lamm Gottes" featuring persistent dotted rhythms and recorders.
