My 4/5-star Backloggd review of Aquanaut's Holiday: "Very blatantly just a tech demo for Artdink to go "damn, isn't 3D gaming sick, look at these fish", but they kinda ripped for that. It's very "aimless" and clearly meant to be a chill-out zen game. The manual even gives you the surrounding lore that your character is a renowned marine biologist who just needs a break. It also likes to spook you from time to time. Nothing overtly scary, it's not that kind of game, but you will come across strange sights and sounds that really evoke the kind of stuff indie horrors wish they could tastefully pull off, without even really trying. It's not super substantial beyond the surreal discoveries you can make (along with surveying the aquatic life and their strange responses to your sonar), and the way you traverse the sprawling map can feel pretty antiquated at times, but that's okay given what the developers were wanting to go for, and in other regards it feels insanely forward-thinking for *1995*. I filled out the meter for the reef builder which the game considers an end state, and I was given one of the best end screens I've ever seen in a game. I do want to play the sequel, but it's currently only in Japanese and while you can get by without knowing the language, it seems to have a lot more going on with regards to journal-logging, so I want to really absorb it for all that it contains. The PS3 game at least got an Asian-English release, thankfully. As it stands though, this first entry is such a neat curio that I recommend at least playing for a cozy afternoon if you have any love for the Playstation 1, or early 3D gaming in general."
