If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

Book cover of My Little Book of Domestic Anxiety. Green teacup filled with red liquid.
The Trouble with a Liberal Arts Degree
Up on the electrical wire
a goldfinch perches with the sparrows,
reminding me of a boy I knew.
Nineteen, a cab-yellow Acura
and a job coding
at Microsoft. He made
twice the money I did
but never finished high school,
lived alone outside the city
in a building with fifty
identical apartments.
A motel bedspread
of rot-colored flowers, not
one picture on the walls
above the only furniture:
brown couch, television.
I sat on the left.
He pressed his tongue
against the roof of my mouth,
an arrow I couldn’t deflect.
Boys I liked better,
I remember less.
Here's the opening poem for my new chapbook MY LITTLE BOOK OF DOMESTIC ANXIETIES.
I'm waiving shipping for anyone who'd like a copy for their Sealey challenge this month!

As a reminder: LLMs are not intelligent beings. You are providing an input to an algorithm that calculates, in a very complicated way, the probability in which words will follow each other in response to your input based on whatever data was used to train the algorithm.
The algorithm doesn't think.

Graphic for congressional candidate Bethany Andres‑Beck. Top: campaign logo reads “Bethany ANDRES‑BECK for CONGRESS” in white on a navy‑blue background. An orange quotation‑mark graphic frames the candidate’s statement in white and orange text. The statement is identical to the image's caption. The quote is attributed to “ Bethany Andres‑Beck, Candidate for MA‑06.” In the bottom-right quadrant is a photo of Bethany Andres‑Beck, a person with short hair and beard, round glasses, teal T‑shirt under an unbuttoned gray chambray shirt, standing with arms folded and a slight smile. The link to the campaign website “bethfordemocracy.com” is in orange in the bottom left of the image.
I am running for Congress to fight for our country. I’m not here to be polite – I am here to stand up for the working class. Together we’ll prove what should’ve been obvious all along: trans people aren’t political props - we’re leaders.
Visit bethfordemocracy.com to learn more about our campaign!

We live on a beautiful planet filled with mostly decent people seeking only the means to lead lives of dignity. It’s an enduring tragedy that our species has to submit to the world-making fantasies of a few craven psychopaths.

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

Backlash is the only thing that works, here. Without backlash, automated, unstoppable lie generation will seep into and infect every single space that human-created information exists

What a terrible, terrible idea. I have loved the iNaturalist app but won't be using it any more as long as they're doing this. The environmental costs of GenAI are way too high (and that's before you get into the ethical issues!).

You know you can just not use AI, right?
You can make a choice not to be part of this.
Even if your job uses it, YOU don’t have to in your normal life. You don’t have to let your kids use it.
You didn’t have it three years ago. You can just…be on Team Human. You can choose.

Disability is not something to be afraid of. It’ll happen to most of us eventually.
The human body is frail. It breaks down. We age. We get sick. We have accidents. It’s part of life.
It’s not a moral failing.
Engage with us. Learn. We all benefit from disability justice.

Because it's not a technology as much as it is a nihilistic ethos about our own obsolescence and extinction. If people wanna live like that, cool I guess, but you can't make me follow you to that dark place.

When you think about the enormous amount of person-hours and energy consumption required to "teach" so-called "AI" to be basically ok at human tasks, I have to ask, has anyone tried putting this much energy and $ into teaching humans to do stuff? Why not? We'd be way better at it.

It would be more truthful if we called AI "pattern-seeking technology" and GenAI "pattern-mimicking technology" but I guess that would break the hype machine that creates the sense of inevitability around it.
