As a reminder: LLMs are not intelligent beings. You are providing an input to an algorithm that calculates, in a very complicated way, the probability in which words will follow each other in response to your input based on whatever data was used to train the algorithm.

The algorithm doesn't think.

We live on a beautiful planet filled with mostly decent people seeking only the means to lead lives of dignity. It’s an enduring tragedy that our species has to submit to the world-making fantasies of a few craven psychopaths.

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

-surveillance operations
-arbitrary searches, arrests, interrogations, detentions, disappearances & torture.

What a terrible, terrible idea. I have loved the iNaturalist app but won't be using it any more as long as they're doing this. The environmental costs of GenAI are way too high (and that's before you get into the ethical issues!).

You know you can just not use AI, right?

You can make a choice not to be part of this.

Even if your job uses it, YOU don’t have to in your normal life. You don’t have to let your kids use it.

You didn’t have it three years ago. You can just…be on Team Human. You can choose.

Disability is not something to be afraid of. It’ll happen to most of us eventually.

The human body is frail. It breaks down. We age. We get sick. We have accidents. It’s part of life.

It’s not a moral failing.

Engage with us. Learn. We all benefit from disability justice.

I think it's projection -- it's easier for some people to say "get nervous, people!" than "I'm getting nervous."

Because it's not a technology as much as it is a nihilistic ethos about our own obsolescence and extinction. If people wanna live like that, cool I guess, but you can't make me follow you to that dark place.

When you think about the enormous amount of person-hours and energy consumption required to "teach" so-called "AI" to be basically ok at human tasks, I have to ask, has anyone tried putting this much energy and $ into teaching humans to do stuff? Why not? We'd be way better at it.

It would be more truthful if we called AI "pattern-seeking technology" and GenAI "pattern-mimicking technology" but I guess that would break the hype machine that creates the sense of inevitability around it.
