I talked with a student and they are going to apply to a conference! This is the first time I have done anything like this! But they've been doing so great this semester and there are a couple small online things going on this summer I think would work great. I feel like a real professor! Exciting 🤩

I'm so tired and beaten down in this environment we've created and sustained and I *do* believe in the power and worth of education and higher education in particular but also, I'm so tired.

Anyway I have an interview next week I'm excited about but right now I just want to sleep

...but how awful that they instinctively assume they're going to get a bad response? How horrible is the academic institution as a whole that they've been primed to expect harsh punitive relationships with their professors? I want to stay so I can help change this but also man, this sucks

I know I complain about students who can't follow directions or who just don't seem to put in the effort but every so often you get a heartbreaking email and it's just like. Idk man. This is why I do this, so that students have someone who is going to respond kindly and help them...

Just got my first job response that was neither an acceptance nor a rejection but a "we've put this position on hold while we reevaluate our hiring needs at this time" so, y'know, that's great and cool and I'm totally chill this is fine
