Applications have also gotten much easier and more frictionless for most selective schools. I applied to like 5 schools 30+ years ago; my daughter applied to 15, mostly on a common appβ€”so I wonder how much the increase in selectivity is driven by pools getting bigger bc ppl apply to more schools

I put together one of those picture reels they play at bar mitzvahs and graduations and asked the photographer to use Forever Young, meaning Alphaville, and he used this song and I’ve never been more bummed

It’s interesting that there’s been a specific backlash against this in the car community; things like FOTU and Radwood (OG) and the whole brown manual wagon trope. I think this is a new thing (within the past 20 years anyway) and it responds to the commodification and curation of β€œluxury” brands

Well unless it’s on a lake, in which case it’s also always a boat, even if it’s 1000 feet long

Future Champions for America Second is unintentionally accurate branding

The thing with Rand is that there’s nothing wrong with reading and enjoying it as a teen as long as a) you also read something else, and b) you grow out of it

02.08.2025 17:52 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

The Fountainhead is, *as a story,* not terrible and the writing isn’t the worst thing you’ll come across when you’re 12 or 13

And Rand has a lot of appeal to a young teen who is all about discovering their own identity and hasn’t yet internalized the benefits they derive from society

Mohammed Zakaria al-Mutawaq, who is about 18 months old and was born during the war, lives with his mother and brother in a tent on a Gaza beach.
Mohammed's mother, Hedaya al-Mutawaq, 31, said the toddler's father was killed last October when he went out to seek food.
"I walk the streets looking for food," she said by phone, her voice barely audible. The charity kitchens she relies on to help feed Mohammed and his brother, Joud, 3, cannot always help, and they go hungry. "As an adult, I can bear the hunger," she said. "But my kids can't."
Mohammed, according to his doctor, had preexisting health problems affecting his brain and his muscle development. But his health deteriorated rapidly in recent months as it became increasingly difficult to find food and medical care, and the medical clinic that treated him said he suffers from severe malnutrition.
"I look at him and I can't help but cry," she said.
"We go to bed hungry and wake up thinking only about how to find food," she added. "I can't find milk or diapers."

I don’t know what the β€œmajor contention” is bc you didn’t bother to explain it but here is what NYT says about him, so I’m not sure how a β€œcorrection” makes any sense?

Agree on that point, and some were criticizing it for being overly male-centric, which I guess is fair…but also I think we need to talk specifically to men about this, so targeting the audience doesn’t really bother me

I’ve enjoyed Ian’s work a lot over the years (even if I disagree with him vehemently on cars and driving), and was kind of mystified by the reaction this piece got yesterday. As you say, it’s very sensible advice!

I think a lot of four wheel disc brakes work this way; I remember adjusting the parking brake shoes on my 987 at one point. According to Wikipedia, this is common on multipiston calipers bc the calipers take more force to engage

The alternative is a smaller parking caliper, like Gary posted
