It's all the better for it. The guardedness, the stilted dialogue near detachment is in my opinion why it works so well. Perhaps one of the best examples ever of using music too, and all sourced from the period or thereabouts, with nothing newly composed.

And what I mean by that is that Kubrick isn't trying to shoehorn in, to handwriting about the social ills and politics of the moment; to project onto Thackeray's 18th century characters anything other than the timeless tropes of survival, avarice, luck and misfortune. (cont)

For Kubrick, the past really was a foreign country, and Barry Lyndon is possibly one of the only historical set movies of its kind that doesn't relate to a contemporary audience. (cont)
