Artober 31: Round and round the wheel turned, the funfair attendees laughing and taking in the sights and waving to their friends below. And then the screaming started.

I didn't really know what to expect beyond what the trailers showed, which had a kind of Silent Hill vibe. But it was something else. I thought it built the creepiness up pretty well, which made the jump scares more effective. YMMV, but I enjoyed it.

Reject modernity, embrace tradition

Artober 30: After the runaway success of the Cheddar Goblin campaign (especially in the pre-teen demographic - where slime always sells well), the range soon expanded to gravies, meats and even nuts. Each goblin was more hideous than the last.

Surrealist revenge horror with Nic Cage. Certainly stylish and brutal and weird and at times almost beautiful, it doesn't *quite* work for me, but I respect the bonkersness of it all. Also: Nic Cage.

Blu-ray of Mandy, rated 18, starring Nic Cage, featuring Nic Cage's character, bloodied and armed with a chainsaw, while his lover's face looks out from over his shoulder.

Movie 30: Mandy (2018). After the woman he loves is kidnapped and killed by a cult leader - with help from cannibalistic demon bikers - a lumberjack snaps and goes out for bloody revenge.

Artober 29: I mean, I'd be getting tanked on cheap vodka, too, if I had to work with kids all day. Bleurgh.

The creep factor of this one hasn't dimmed since I first saw it earlier this year - and it's impressive that the villain triggers my coulrophobia without *actually* being a clown. Also, the ending is very silly and I love it.

Movie 29: Weapons (2025). At 2:17am one fateful night, all but one of the children in Justine Gandy's class get out of bed and Naruto run from their houses into the night. While the town's focus - and anger - turns on her, something more sinister weaves its web in the darkness.

Artober 28: If a picture tells 1,000 words, what of a VHS?

Certainly an interesting concept, and fun to see the footage from crappy early 2000s camcorders and phone cameras, but the documentary framing device didn't help get the pulse racing.

Artober 27: Turns out Yooka and Laylee were collecting the papery servants of a demon all along. Who'da thunk it?

I mean, it was probably only tolerable viewed through the lens of Rifftrax. It felt like an episode of the '90s Goosebumps series, stretched to feature length and with most sex, violence and swearing.

and then spent the rest of our time playing Journeys In Middle-Earth from the library, although less "playing" and more "getting beaten up by" - turns out elf bard/hobbit thief is not the strongest combo.
Then a trip to Wagamama, then the new Frankenstein movie (which was fine).
Overall? Good day.
