This is kind of a non-answer, but Bill, demigod of nightmares, terror, and vindication, appears to everyone as their deepest fear. But to John, he's just a 7'-tall asparagus with coal for eyes and a carrot nose. Does John have an asparagus phobia? Not as far as he knows. 🤷
That sounds great, and you're a vastly better prepared author than I am to have planned it (or anything, really) in advance! 😁 But yeah; names and knowledge gaps can be a lot of fun to play around with.

08.03.2026 19:10 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I'd suggest making a spreadsheet of character names and characteristics... but every time I do that, I find I start changing details during the writing of the book and forget to go back and update the spreadsheet. The initial cast list of See These Bones has very little relation to the end product.
08.03.2026 19:01 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I did have a character (side character of a side character) whose name changed between books from Susan to Suzanne, and I only explained that after the fact as the MC having called her the wrong name for six months, so... I guess there are multiple options available! 😆
08.03.2026 19:00 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I need to do a better job of keeping track of things. Or stop rotating between three actives series! 😄

I guess since I accidentally gave a Saturday snippet on Friday, I should give a new one on Saturday? That's the rule, right?
A brief scene of domestic bliss (kind of?) from Godswar.
When you're six books into your series and have to look through all five previous books to see if you ever gave a side character a last name... 🙄
...and end up still not being 100% sure. 😅 Isn't pantsing fun?!?
I closed a throwaway account I'd had for years (mainly to avoid spam) and have been dealing with the fallout for almost 5 months. 🙃 It's crazy how many things end up being tied to those accounts without us realizing it!

At least gmail is getting better about marking the endless AI-generated, fake book club emails as spam. Now I get 5-6 of them a day in my spam folder instead of my inbox.

I do a truly miserable job of promoting my newsletter. 😅 I think that, because it's long been promised to only be a notification service for new releases, it's a little bit harder for me to have fun with it? But welcome!!
And I really owe you a non-newsletter email! This weekend! I hope! 🙏😁
Snippet from Godswar: Chapter 7 IN WHICH YOU HAVEN’T TRULY MADE IT UNTIL SOMEONE TRIES TO KILL YOU Contrary to what most of San Diego probably thought of me, I wasn’t a complete idiot. If there was one thing I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, it was that Anastasia was a hell of a lot smarter than me. So, if she said I needed to be wary of [spoiler], I was taking that warning as gospel. In fact, I’d kept her in view and out of reach the entire way out of my office. The only problem? [Spoiler] wasn’t the one that attacked me.

Unedited Saturday snippet from Godswar.
Tonight's whisky tasting.

The risks in Godswar are wide-ranging and substantial, as its title might suggest.
On a more local level, John and everyone he knows and loves--up to and including his still-unborn, so-called apocalypse baby--is in real danger.
It'll still be funny though. (I hope. 😅)
Third straight Pels game that League Pass will keep me from watching. At least they're getting them out of the way in a hurry.
06.03.2026 02:39 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Or an even less competent one in Markwayne. Shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. 😂

It makes me laugh that 3 of play-in bound Atlanta's 5 starters are former Pelicans.
Meanwhile, the Pels are 19-44 and spent 2 of next year's draft picks (both of which could have been high picks) on someone who plays the same position and possesses many of the same flaws as their current star.
#FantasyIndiesMarch 4:
I don't think many of these characters believe in fate, but John can't help but believe in luck. After all, it's all too frequently been the sole reason he stays alive.
#FantasyIndiesMarch 3:
There aren't a ton of lies floating around in this WIP just yet but there is a persistent rumor from last book that John had his rival mediator, Caleb Van Stahl, assassinated. 😮
Though people seem torn on whether John knew about the hit or Anastasia just did it on her own.
Another Pels game I can't watch (much like Sunday's) because League Pass thinks Vegas is somehow both part of Los Angeles and Sacramento and therefore blacks out all games the Pels play against any three of those teams. ☹️

#FantasyIndiesMarch 2:
John: Sweets, fast food, musicals, and comics
Anastasia: Popcorn movies, though she'll never admit to it
Lucia: "There is no guilt in taking the pleasures I am rightly owed."
So it kind of makes you wonder where the disconnect is. You can see the feedback loop in operation and then it's like it just stops.
