Roughly 5% of kids will learn to read well this way, through a language-rich environment and little / no direct instruction. Great for them! But most kids will need some degree of explicit instruction to read well and not founder.

For a split second as Bluesky was loading, it showed me this post as if it were written by Joyce Carol Oates. Which seemed โ€ฆ maybe even plausible!

I love you. So much. (Not in a creepy way. In a โ€œCame for the funny teacher videos, stayed for the revolutionโ€ way.)

You just couldnโ€™t help Almost doing something important and then becoming a laughingstock, could you? While all of us pay the price. Just infuriating and embarrassing.

Iโ€™m so sorry. Your engagement and commitment to your students is so evident. But all the teachers I know are feeling โ€ฆ tired.

I grew up on turnip greens, not collards, but Iโ€™ll happily take either one prepared well. And yes, add hot sauce and theyโ€™ll cure anything.

Iโ€™ve seen the (clearly ludicrous!) argument that the cream is somehow providing a barrier that protects the scone from the jam. As if we donโ€™t Want the jam infiltrating the little nooks and crannies while the cream piles atop in glorious dollops!

No, your parents' first cousins' children are your second cousins. Your parents' first cousins are you first-cousins-once-removed. Lol... So, um, yeah, there are reasons to prefer a simple catch-all for older relatives and close friends!

I remember my parents trying to correct what they saw as a similar misunderstanding. Obviously your daughter and I are / were right. Itโ€™s not our fault no one else can spell.

When my children were young, I was so insistent that we stay in our own (very quiet) neighborhood to TorT and not go to the ones swarming with outsiders. I knew my kids might be the only ones visiting most of our neighbors and for some it clearly made their week (or more.)

11yo and I are reading Emma together right now, and I stop approximately every other page to explain WHY THIS IS HILARIOUS. ... It's a little tedious, but it's an investment in her future giggles. (And some now. Because ... it's hilarious.)

What a heartbreaking story as a mom. What a thing to carry forever, that your fear directly lead to your childโ€™s suffering and death.

I'd take my toddlers to look at the fish, but then some young person would be there scooping out all the (many, many) dead ones and... Yeah, maybe not all that magical after all.
