Children’s heart unit in ‘very precarious state’ A surgeon at one of England's largest teaching trusts has had their practice restricted following the deaths of two children, amid a "worrying and significant deterioration" in mortality rates for…

Shocking story from my colleague Matt Mathers. This should give pause for thought among those who have opposed further centralisation of paediatric cardiac surgery. Small units look very vulnerable.

as is the reporting of any form of immigration tribunal. Grab one clickbait worthy element and make out that it was the sole reason someone was allowed to stay,

Exclusive: Trust reviewing 9,000 patients lost from waiting list A trust has launched an independent investigation examining nearly 9,000 patients who were "lost to first appointment or follow up", with some waiting up to five years, HSJ can reveal.

I'm wondering whether these patients were automatically removed from the waiting list after 180 days if an appt date had not been given: a policy devised when waits of many months were rare & patients without a confirmed date were assumed to be a mistake in inputting.

Rethink Charity - Empowering Palestinian Doctors | LaunchGood | LaunchGood 🩺Gaza to Oxford - Empowering Palestinian Doctors

A neighbour alerted me to this: if you are concerned about what has happened to medical services in Gaza, help bring exceptional medical students to Oxford for short courses designed to boost their knowledge and skills. But it needs funding.

Climate change bringing new species and potentially new diseases to the UK is a massive risk and not well-reported in the media at the moment, IMO.

I don't think this is a small problem for those with health anxieties. A friend once had the results of a private blood test delivered without any context. One result (out of very many) was slightly off. She googled it (never a good idea) and told me she had 11 years left to live.

'Confusion' over mortuary oversight still 'widespread' four years after necrophilia scandal There is "widespread confusion" among which senior executive is accountable for mortuary services, with many CEOs blind to potential criminal liability, according to the final report into the abuse…

One question the inquiry could have asked of chief execs: how often do you visit your mortuary and ask staff about the issues they face each day?

WHAT? They have actually realised we need immigration and our social care system, in particular, is going to collapse without it.

worth knowing as pharmacists don't always offer it. And may be very suspicious if eg it's a controlled drug or one with a street value.

and the issue of IDing genes which are a risk factor for soemthing for which there is no treatment or way of mitigating the risk? Lots of ethical issues in how this info is used and presented (given that other family memmers who may not have consented to testing are then drawn in)

yead. Maybe I'm cynical but not sure genomics is going to be quite the gamechanger it is sometimes seen as - possibly because it needs to be backed up with services that act on its findings.

yes. I think some of what has been thrown at Liz Kendall recently has also verged on misogyny.

Not sure about the comparison but what is happening in the US at the moment is an enormous opportunity for other countries which can offer a better working environment. Question is whether it is a 3 year opportunity or whether some scientists will stay beyond the next US election.

it has been very tempting to work from the car today - not only aircon, but a "chilled" option for the front seats. Like sitting on an ice pack!
