Great to see this out! I hope platforms like @joinprolific.bsky.social take note, it currently looks like online behavioral research is becoming increasingly infeasible

Mengchen Dong @iyadrahwan.bsky.social and I report data from 3,000+ people (incl. welfare claimants) showing how much accuracy they're willing to sacrifice to get faster AI decisions for social benefits. it's very hard for non-claimants to understand claimants. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I think we are walking into the same traps with AI as we did with social media: information technologies are making new areas and scales available, but they are not neutral but built by people and companies for certain goals and wonโ€™t just magically align with democratic values or well-being, โ€ฆ 1/2

A defense of dual character concepts in legal philosophy and beyond Recent work in jurisprudence claimed that central legal concepts, such as that of LEGAL VALIDITY and of a legal RULE have a dual character structure. Moreover,

I just posted a new pre-print where I argue that dual character concepts are something new and interesting in legal philosophy and beyond and that they can't be reduced to ambiguity, prototypes, or metalinguistic negotiations. Comments are very welcome! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Discussion

Transparency - knowing how much unearned gain an algorithmic delegate produces for the user and how it achieves this - did not curb cheating in the die rolling game.

Yet, process measures revealed that participants actively engaged with transparency information - hence the null effect on behavior is likely not explained by disinterest or lack of understanding.

Instead, transparency alone appears insufficient to shift participants' moral interpretation of the task or to motivate ethical behavior.

In contrast, framing manipulations significantly influenced behavior.

Explicitly labeling dishonest actions as such (moral framing) reduced cheating.

After lunch, @neeleengelmann.bsky.social addressed why delegation to #AI may encourage #cheating:

Factors
- Transparency of how much unearned gain an [AI] delegate produces for the user and how it achieves this
- Framing: whether dishonest actions are explicitly labeled as such
- Their interaction?

Ok, time for a short thread about this paper.

My sense over the past six months or so is that chain-of-thought prompting as used in e.g. ChatGPT o.3 improves substantially upon previous systems such as ChatGPT 4.o, at least for certain tasks.

But how revolutionary is it?
