There was someone who sent me the message 'Is this perhaps a better time to reach you?' over and over.

It was unclear why they were trying to reach me in the first place

And the inaccessibility. We have little to no chance of increasing the diversity of teams and creating access to work opportunities, if we don’t tackle the poor usability and lack of inclusion in pretty much all corporate software

our "smart" coffee machine at work is broken today. I made a joke about it being related to the AWS outage but then we looked in the back and it's plugged into ethernet

If we assume that people can't do something at all, it's likely to make the 'standard' experience less accessible.

You want participation to feel natural.

If you have to go on a completely different journey because of the barriers, it becomes another thing which separates you from other people.

One of the concepts that came across in the book was that disability rights and accessibility are often not considered or thought about as part of wider human rights or civil rights.

Even with people who work
in human rights every day.

Excerpt from Being Heumann by Judith Heumann Our peers from Europe complained about how their barriers were seen as purely medical, rather than an issue of human or civil rights. The basic question was about autonomy. Disabled people wanted to be able to live where they wished, get up and eat when they wished, and hire the personal assistants who helped them, provided they complied with laws regarding workers' rights and benefits, of course. When these supports were run from a medical approach they didn't necessarily support a person's ability to be autonomous, which is why our concept of independent living was so important and starting to permeate other countries' thinking. We started getting grants to compare state policies policies of specific European countries, developed an internship

It's important to imagine how a disabled person might be able to participate or do something independently/preserve their autonomy.

Privacy & autonomy are often taken away from people with access needs. Baked in assumptions can reinforce this.
