It is Good that I do not have to "do my own research" on whether or not the chicken skewers I bought at Costco are safe to eat.

And they are all competing for investors' money, which means they each have to promise ever-greater returns on those investments to beat out their competitors for those investments - which means even further focus on profit.

Breaking up a big profit-seeking enterprise into a bunch of smaller profit-seeking enterprises does literally nothing to solve that problem. Arguably, in fact, it makes it worse because now you have an even larger number of institutional organizations dedicated to maximizing profits.

The problem with "Big Pharma" is not that we have huge corporations putting people to work discovering treatments for diseases. The problem with Big Pharma is that it's substantially driven by the motivation of profits rather than the motivation of reducing human suffering.

We have to move on from the idea that big things are inherently bad and small things are inherently good. It's empirically wrong. The size of something has absolutely no relationship with whether that thing is beneficial or harmful.

you can't tell people to give up their cars when they're living in unsustainable sprawled-out vehicle-dependent suburbs. they'll laugh at you. the Bay Area needs five million new apartment and condo units, maybe more.

like, we demonstrably *need* growth in housing in urban areas of the United States - this will facilitate people living in more sustainable conditions that are conducive to not needing a car and using public transit.

telling people that you are going to make their lives better is a winning message. telling people that you're going to lower their standard of living is a message that will never poll above 15%.

so yes, we could redirect demand from damaging things to less damaging things. that's a good goal. but you aren't going to be able to reduce aggregate demand without major pushback.

If everyone has more time off, they're likely going to want to travel more and visit parks more. I'm going to need more staff, not less, to manage that increase in visitation. More toilets, more trails, bigger visitor centers, etc.

People who want to visit the place where I work are generally going to need a car too, because they need to get here, and I'm pretty sure that Baker, Nevada (population 50) is not going to ever get meaningful mass transportation.

I live in a county in Nevada that's two-thirds the size of The Netherlands but has only 9,000 residents.

I don't think cars get less appealing if you're giving people more free time. Particularly in the United States - we aren't Western Europe, we have distances and a population density that makes it infeasible to serve many areas with mass transit such as rail.
