Using fluorescence live imaging and an in vitro implantation model, we show that human embryo attachment begins with direct cell fusion via syncytin-2–MFSD2A interaction.

Incredibly excited to receive an ERC Consolidator Grant. This recognition means a lot for what we’ve built so far and for what’s ahead.

Thank you to all collaborators and supporters.

Looking forward to getting this project going!

Huge congrats to Dr. Sonja Weterings!

Yesterday Sonja from my lab @hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social delivered an outstanding PhD defense. Her thesis explores how frequency encoding shapes cell type composition in the intestine.

We’re so proud of her, and we’re going to miss her!

I agree, it would be super interesting to zoom in further into specific regions. We were aiming for detection of low abundance proteins and decided against sectioning further. But definitely the next step, also with mass spec getting more and more sensitive.

Key findings:
β€’ Mapped novel oscillatory proteins and transcripts that could play a role in somitogenesis
β€’ Discovered a dynamic, antagonistic ligand–receptor pattern in R-Spondin/LGR signalling
β€’ Perturbing ligand dynamics impairs signalling strength and somite differentiation

Preprint alert!
We combined microfluidics, proteomics, and RNA-seq to map spatiotemporal protein expression during mouse somitogenesis and found a novel regulatory strategy: dynamic antagonistic gradients fine-tune signalling strength.

Thank you for the kind words and highlighting this milestone. I’m thrilled and honoured to have reached tenure.
Big thanks to my lab, colleagues, mentors, friends and family who’ve supported me along the way.
Excited to keep doing what I love - now with slightly more security.

It was fun reflecting on how my career path took me from a focus on cancer research to developmental biology, the urge to understand how development and tissue homeostasis work and how my time at the @biozentrum.unibas.ch contributed to this. Thank you, Katrin BΓΌhler-Popowski, for the interview!
