Earthquake frequency-magnitude distribution at Mount Etna sheds light on magma ascent in the volcano’s plumbing system Earthquake frequency-magnitude distribution tracks magma ascent from the deep crust to the surface.

Earthquakes at #MountEtna reveal magma ascent from deep to shallow crust. 🌋
Temporal variations in #bvalue track magma movement through the volcano’s plumbing system.

Advancing our understanding of these hidden processes is essential for improving seismic and tsunami hazard assessment—especially in regions that are otherwise difficult to study directly.

Understanding these systems is critical. For such reason I’m working on a project aiming to monitor subduction slip behavior using remote seismological techniques. By analyzing teleseismic signals, we investigate subtle precursory phases and slow slip phenomena.

Both works represent important steps forward, each shedding light on different facets of the volcano’s internal workings. And there's more to come: other studies are currently in preparation.

📍 The second study, led by PhD student Gianmarco Del Piccolo, identifies a pressurized magma storage system within a radial dike network located between 6 and 16 km depth—a configuration that could play a key role in Etna’s eruptive behavior.

#Etna is speaking loudly today
Its activity intensified, producing an impressive plume, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and, later, sustained lava fountains.
This episode comes just as two recent scientific studies offer fresh perspectives on Etna’s internal structure and dynamics.
