We still don't know why curling stones move the way they do The icy ballet of stone upon ice makes curling one of the most intriguing sports of the Winter Olympics. But scientists still haven't quite figured out the physics of how they move.

A colleague (non-science guy!) sent this curling physics article to me. Lots of good stuff! Mentions tribology by name. Mentions the earliest known hypothesis and a bunch of competing present-day ones. #ITeachPhysics

This is my usual viewing too - one of the best physics videos in my opinion! I like how it discusses fictitious forces in linearly accelerated frames first.

Physics teachers, how do (if at all!) explain the centrifugal force?

I am interested in this tricky bit of physics and keen to hear your ideas!

Nice. I like your use of 'zoom out' in the context of FoR. You introduce centrifugal force as a fictitious force acting on the object then, as opposed to the reaction force on the agent of the centripetal force?

Great read - always a big fan of summation notation for resultant force!

Great read thanks Joe! Out of interest, do you mention the centrifugal force to students? If so, how do you explain? 😊

The front cover of the book: Crick, by Matthew Cobb

Loved this brilliant biography of Crick by @matthewcobb.bsky.social But what struck me from the start: it's also a portrait of a lost time in science: no grant applications or teaching, big travel budgets: the job only to think, talk & get science done. Future scientific biogs will be so different.

When I have set a class questions to complete independently, I spend around 10%-20% of the time at the start standing at the front of the classroom. Seemingly doing nothing.

I mentioned this to a colleague who asked "but shouldn't you be circulating?"

No. 🧵

Must-have LaTeX packages for Physics teachers What was once a daunting thing to use is now my go-to way of making worksheets.

Some say it looks boring, but for me it makes it standardised and easy to manage as it’s all code! Also in the age of Copilot, editors understand code better.

Here’s my frequently used LaTeX packages to make my worksheets.

I have a new article out in the Chartered College of Teaching journal Impact, called ‘Embedding AI in education: A critique’. Here I make five main points, which I will helpfully plop in this thread for those without access or time to read it.
