08.12.2025 22:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A couple years ago, it was discovering that any .ac.uk email had been pre-filtered. Trying to explain that's the ENTIRE UK academic suffix, being 'splained to that "its on a list of spam generators" and so IT refusing to allow those in. How many emails did I miss from colleagues? Will never know
08.12.2025 18:05 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0This year's quality IT moment was explaining that U of Pennsylvania and U of Pittsburgh are not the same school

08.12.2025 17:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Heads up to PhD letter writers and to programs using My Liason system for grad letter submissions. I am not receiving any emails from Liason to my SFU address, even to reset my password. IT Services can't find anything; this happened last year also. You might need to go looking! #philsky #philsci
08.12.2025 17:57 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Giving a talk today! I am excited to be working out how to structure this overall argument, lots of moving pieces and not in any final form yet. And definitely longer than 1 paper. In the meantime, here's the bit I am focusing on now. #philsci #philsky

woohoo! I had a similar experience, though mine involved the "didnt notice about my kids because I was like that -> kids get diagnosed -> -> I get diagnosed" path. started adhd meds about 2 years ago. Like turning down the static volume knob. wish I had known sooner. good luck with the new meds!

03.12.2025 22:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0we had to do 2 "publishable quality papers" for comps and it was super useful, both because you had to level up from term paper writing to do it, and because some people discovered they actually hated writing papers like that and it was better to complete the master's and move on, than write a diss
03.12.2025 21:59 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I do have a bit in my talk for Friday about epistemic wrongs vs epistemic harms. Does it work for this case? Dunno, will think about it

29.11.2025 17:59 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I got myself a neuron scarf for my talk in Bloomington at IU HPS and it is so awesome. Bringing to attention of philosophers of science if you want to support small biz artists #philsci

One upside of the week's news is that I am reading cool historical stuff on Rosalind Franklin and her work #philsci

The crows in Bloomington do the same evening commute through the sky together as they do in Burnaby. A river of flying crows at sunset. View from @jordicat.bsky.social 's office: there were dozens to hundreds per tree.
07.11.2025 15:51 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I love that the scientists named their subs after The Neverending Story characters, and that the journalist made sure this info made it in

In contrast, have been watching The Foundation series while cooking, and keep thinking, can't Harry Seldon just die and stay dead already please

me either. I met with this teacher once, who insisted all students do poorly in math going from grade 9 to 10, and without thinking I asked, doesnt that mean curriculum or pedagogy is going wrong, if it is this is systematic? Shoulda thought before saying it, probably made it worse for my kiddo
26.10.2025 02:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We're encountering at kid's high school, some math teachers who think it reflects well on them that so many of their students do poorly. frustrating as a parent and also as a prof who gets a lot of these students in college and have wondered why they seem so traumatized by anything formal
