the literacy crisis could be worse than anyone is imagining and that still wouldn't justify all the people I see talking about it like NPC theory

the US is abandoning green energy at precisely the moment it is becoming not just a climate neccesity but also like a strategically important industry

"No matter for whose sake they are, your wounds are yours. They're not something that anyone can shoulder in your place. I, as well as Hou, didn't understand that.
Get hurt all you want.
"I will endure that. If it hurts too much, I will suck it up." I thought... I should no longer get hurt.
That if someone was to grieve, I shouldn't get hurt."

But, it's no good like that.
In the end, it's no good like that.
It's no good with just that.
Getting hurt.
Getting hurt getting hurt getting hurt.
There are things you don't understand without that. Though you can't endure looking at others' wounds. Though you can't endure others getting hurt.
Even then.
Without averting your eyes, without closing your eyes. Without ever closing your eyes.
Not even blinking for an instant.
Properly looking,
properly witnessing.
You have to endure.
That's...
The difference between kindness and sweetness. Right.
Don't be so spoiled.
Your wounds,
and others' wounds,
don't fear them.
Wounding each other.
Licking each others' wounds.
"I will grow up."

insane reversal of responsibility, by which I mean it makes the proper *separation* of responsibility (the professor to provide something to read, the student to read it) impossible. why does everyone want guarantees for everything.

this is way way more significant to the literacy crisis than anyone is talking about and I bet you could demonstrate it empirically

not sure how common this is but in the last class I TA'd I was told specifically *not* to give back line-by-line edits on exam questions bc 1) students could pass them on/share them to metagame "correct" answers 2) not all the TAs had time or wanted to do them, so it would create a mimetic gradient

fuck it, for the people in the back:

the jeff bezos owned washington post is the outlet responsible for making sure the primary complaint about AI was water. this may have been in part because jeff knew it was bullshit, so when amzn gets blowback they can easily prove their water footprint is small

it's a fractal confluence of things that already wrong with academia – arbitrarily open-ended "personal essays" that functions as gifts of the student's Self rather than focal points of external engagement make this kind of thing almost inevitable, as does the disappearance of close writing feedback

there were no personal experiences appealed to, just a worldview. there was also basically no reference to the readings.

it's possible there were other responses this bad that didn't get as bad a grade! I haven't seen any interest in even *investigating* this from any parties involved

"We are coarse, but it is we ourselves who suffer from this coarse ness. We are full of prejudices, but it is we ourselves who suffer as a result-we understand this. We shall search for happiness, we shall discover humaneness, and we shall become good. This will come to pass. If we live a little longer, we shall live to see it.
"Labor without knowledge bears no fruit. Our own happiness is impossible without the happiness of others. We shall become edu cated, we shall be enriched; we will be happy and will become broth ers and sisters. This will come to pass. Ifwe live a little longer, we shall live to see it.

anyway if this was about Stancil claiming he could fix everything by writing an article I'd be more sympathetic – then he'd be writing the article, and thinking about how to disseminate it, instead of complaining about what *other* people write.

30.11.2025 20:17 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I'm not saying there are no barriers to adequate dissemination of the information! the average person I talk to IRL has probably never seen this post. (I'm in Canada but that probably moves that average *up*.) I'm trying to distinguish this from "the media's job is to ensure the emotional reaction"

30.11.2025 20:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 2    📌 0

there's also a specific online structure of feeling here that "dignity = taking an L", which you also see in Trump himself, the reaction to that Shen bike comic, incels etc. I've known people who basically ruin their own lives by believing that IRL

30.11.2025 20:05 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

"but screaming is an appropriate emotional reaction to fascism" yes and if your audience has their moral compass intact they will have it, and *still* resent you for trying to add *your* scream to theirs. the point isn't stiff upper lip repression but the distinction btwn public and private spheres

30.11.2025 20:03 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

I know I'm harping on the metaphor here but I think it's important as usual – when the media's obligation to alert the public gets conflated with "emotional catharsis for the media class", not only does it tend to alienate the public, it means to avoid that you have to *avoid* telling certain truths

30.11.2025 19:58 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

in general it is just odd to me whenever internet public figures prescribe "the media screaming" as a solution to anything, as if that doesn't *sound* like making yourself the soyjak or strawman in a comic. when we were actually fighting fascists the message was "keep calm and carry on"

30.11.2025 19:44 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

yes I can imagine it, I was there for Trump1. everyone not already primed to agree with them would freak out about how he's being persecuted by the media and signifiers would split on a weekly basis. we need some way to talk about stuff as objectively clear as now but it's obv what they're avoiding

"I stop and peer into the space between the two boilers, where shadow swarms. A face peers back at me, the face of a shaggy black dog or wolf with a hideous snarl and blood-drenched fangs. The face does not move or make a sound.

"These tunnels connected the Newport mansions. Servants, who often worked at multiple houses, traveled through them without anyone aboveground needing to know they existed..."

It's him. It can only be him. The shape of the face fades into view in this black crevice. I see the human body beneath the canine head, arms with five splayed fingers pressed against the brick, the legs and back arched. It's him: the Gorehound.

"Coal was shoveled down those chutes."

He's the one who slashes, the phantom waiting where you tell the character not to go. Chainsaw kill. Machete kill. Butcher knife kill. D'Addario was right all along, she'd already seen the movie on bootleg, she knew exactly what frame his horrible visage first emerged, and in which order we were devoured.

"Lim?"

He sits there, motionless, the Gorehound.

"Lim!"

My gaze breaks. I glance to the end of the room, at Ryan and Corbett and Wintermute.

"Hurry up dumbass," Corbett says.

My glance returns to the Gorehound. He lifts a finger to his frozen lips: shh.

He's not there.

That's right. Gorehound is a horror movie. It's fiction. And, in fact, I haven't seen it, either the new one or its two previous installments. I do not know what the Gorehound looks like, if there is even a "Gorehound" at all, some monstrous wolfman who slaughters the squealing teens. I don't know the barest snatch of plot, if it has one. I simply assumed a film called Gorehound must be about some such creature, and out of these shadows, aided by an odd mound of coal or half-distinguished pipe, I have conjured it."
