This has been a long time coming, and we confess that it was prompted by others making similar decisions, but Trans Activism UK is officially disbanding. If you’ve been looking at our social media, you’ll know that we’ve been inactive for a long time. This is for a variety of reasons, but it primarily boils down to the fact that we are very busy as individuals with our own personal projects (activism included), and we’ve not been immune to burnout. We are a collective of disabled, neurodivergent and intersectionally marginalised folks who can only put so many eggs in so many baskets. So, we have decided to finally make the call and say goodbye to Trans Activism UK. We had a small amount of Treasury funds left over from previous fundraising, which we have chosen to donate to Rainbow Migration and Trans Safety Network.
We are so incredibly grateful for all of the amazing support we have received over the last few years, which has come in so many different forms. This includes not just people attending protests and supporting us online but also the stewards, first aiders, legal observers, people who let us borrow or even built us equipment, people who donated to BSL interpreters or charities through us, and guests we’ve had on fundraising live streams. We’re also grateful to all of the people we have liaised with, from registered charities to smaller, fellow grassroots groups and individuals. We’ve had such a beautiful, diverse and unforgettable range of speakers who united us as a community and helped to provide a feeling of solidarity that was desperately needed in very dark times. The simple truth of the matter is that while we did engage in a lot of work behind the scenes in terms of far less visible activism, our most notable actions, our protests, are not what the UK needs right now.
We need actual, legitimate change. This doesn’t mean that you should stop protesting. One of the most amazing things that we’ve witnessed in the last couple of years is the massive rise in local grassroots activism, where people have realised just how easy and accessible it can be to throw together action at the last minute anywhere in the UK. But, the world needs more practical activism, both in the form of legal work being achieved by existing groups who are far more qualified than we’ll ever be, and action more radical than what we are capable of. So we’re not just saying goodbye, we’re also saying ‘thank you’ to all of the people fighting for transgender, nonbinary and gender diverse people in the UK, at a time when things are, to be frank, fucking terrifying. You give us hope when it feels like there is none.
We’ll end this with a horribly cliche thing that we’ve said at pretty much all of our protests: Trans people protest simply by waking up and taking a breath. Your existence is a form of activism, and that will never change.

Trans Activism UK’s Statement on the Department of Education’s draft guidance on “Gender questioning children.” We already know that this guidance is largely unlawful, as confirmed by the government’s own lawyer’s whose comments on this draft were that it would not stand up to legal challenges. However, a failure to adhere to both the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998 has become par for the course under this Conservative government. But the truly shocking thing about this publication is the consistent use of hostile language and anti-trans dog whistles and terminology. The guidance refuses to use terms such as ‘transgender’ for minors, it uses the term “gender identity ideology," which was explicitly coined by anti-trans groups, and it insists that the mere concept of ‘gender’ is contentious. These few examples alone prove how frankly malicious and completely inappropriate the wording used is. They have no place in any official documentation.
We would like to advise that Kemi Badenoch and Gillian Keegan undergo some basic Equality, Diversity & Inclusion training, as apparently they must have missed that mandatory e-learning when appointed in their respective positions. In the meantime, it is crucial to emphasise that this guidance is not just unlawful, it is also non-statutory. Thankfully for the many schools that care about legitimate safeguarding for their pupils, this means that they are not under any obligation to follow this draft guidance. Should any school feel compelled to follow this guidance, they will face an immediate risk of isolating marginalised pupils and creating an environment that encourages the bullying of vulnerable children.
Galop released a statement yesterday that confirmed, using data from YouGov, that a great portion of abuse experienced by trans and non-binary people under the age of 18 comes from within their own families, and that the most common perpetrators of this abuse are parents. This draft guidance intends to override already existing safeguarding procedures within schools and skip straight to exposing minors to potentially unsafe home environments, all whilst encouraging staff to disregard pupil’s wishes and give the potential to create a situation where youths feel in danger both at home and at school, ultimately removing any safe space for them to exist in.
It is important to note that this guidance is under consultation until 12th March 2024. A photo of Corei Hall, a 14-year-old white trans boy who was tragically lost to suicide. Rita Williams is organising a fundraiser to pay for his funeral expenses, the text in the screenshot reads: Corei was our son and brother who tragically took his life, and died on 12th October 2023 aged just 14. We are fundraising for a memorial headstone, grave plot, flowers and other associated funeral expenses to give him the send off he deserves. After Corei has been laid to rest and the memorial paid for, we will give everything remaining to charity: 50% to Great Ormond Street Hospital as they looked after Corei and us so well in his last days, and 50% split equally 3 ways between the trans youth charities Think2Speak and Mermaids, and the youth mental health charity Young Minds, in the hope that young lives can be saved. If we reach our target this should be a substantial sum and will honour Corei’s last wish to protect trans youth in his name.
