Growing up, mom often mentioned living in West Germany, contrasting their "papers please" culture with the freedom people in the US had to be anywhere we pleased (except behind the steering wheel) without the need to carry ID.

Seeing us slide into that sort of system bit by bit is heartbreaking.

The number of posts and mentions I've seen about the new airpods' translation function are really revealing a weird strain of xenophobic paranoia. Nobody's speaking their first language just to get away with talking about you within your earshot 🙄

Italic diaspora problems: when visiting places one degree closer to the motherland (i.e., Philadelphia or any other major northeast US metro) I get judged because my Italian is shit, AND my pronunciation of things is judged harshly because my family's dialect is from Calabria AND I'm from Texas.
