I agree. I was in Munich and saw Vance’s speech - and the reaction to it. It was a visceral shock. Immediately afterwards I told an American friend, outside the hall, that Europeans would have to stop buying American weaponry. She just laughed. But you can see that beginning to happen.

We're seeing a lot of very rapid geopolitical and geo-economic thinking going on right now in Europe about what the end of the US alliance means for its security, economy & diplomacy.

I haven't seen any parallel thinking among the US Atlanticist community about what it means for the US.

In the past month, and I would mark the watershed moment as JD Vance's Munich speech, Europe has realized there is no going back: There may still be periods of Europhile Democratic administrations in which closer cooperation is possible, but the fundamental nature of the relationship has changed.
