I don’t disagree with him being right and the fans not wanting to hear it BUT I think the fan expectation is essentially that the manager is deferential to them even if it means being wrong. After you earn the fans’ trust you can do the “hard truths” thing, otherwise things can (did) get hostile

How to connect positively with the fans and instill the belief in players that may not have been as talented that the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. Trust me I love Ange, but, for whatever reason, his relationship with the club/fans felt adversarial imo

Sorry I’m not saying better answers don’t exist (and you gave a very good one!) but my recollection is most say things more like what Frank did when in the same situation. Anyway, it’s a tough situation asking managers to comment on players mid-transfer and the answers range from bad to not-as-bad

Curious to hear what a manager has said about a player mid-transfer while the window is open that’s much different. He can’t say “Yeah we’re trying to move him but it’s not done yet so I guess right now he’s still a Spurs player!” I’m pretty sure Frank’s response is not uncommon!
