What teachers need to know about restoring students' confidence, meaning and agency
We’re teaching children to see struggle as signs of mental ill health. In doing so, schools risk becoming traumagenic. What if suffering is a sane response to adversity, not a condition to be treated? open.substack.com/pub/daviddid...

Another great Irish debut. Frogs for Lapdogs, published by New Island. Launched tonight. A wonderful child narrator with not a trace of sentimentality. A descendant of the Big House novel too. My Q&A with author Seán Farrell is in Irish Times Saturday week

I’ll be adding much of today’s ‘Irish Times’ article to my ‘Macbeth’ unit of work on kingship and power. Lots to think about here….😩

Links to thinkers about artificial intelligence, whose writings I find helpful in navigating its implications for English.
For tonight's #edchatie discussion: anyone interested, I put this draft list together of provocative and helpful thinkers (mostly relevant for English). Mentioning writers like @marcwatkins.bsky.social & @janerosenzweig.bsky.social & @audreywatters.bsky.social

My name is not on it but I'll be talking at this event at Ennis Book Club Festival on March 8, remembering Edna O'Brien, whom I worked with when I lived in London.

In Macbeth, people initially go along to get along and uphold the appearance of the state they had. It takes a chaotic public performance by Macbeth and a sense that bloody knives may be directed at anyone to turn the tide. Macduff's principled dissent then brings along a wave of pragmatic dissent.

I'm keen to give this platform more of a go as Twitter descends further into bin fire territory...
I really miss seeing posts from #TeamEnglish. Some of the regulars from the golden age of blogs / sharing resources / discussion on Twitter never appear here...
