regardless of the party saying that only they will save the country.
Focus on policy instead. Government exists by a group of people agreeing to sacrifice some personal freedom in exchange for services. Every law/policy costs money but also liberty. Speaking about the balance of benefit vs costs

if the media had any integrity β€” and it doesn’t anymore β€” they’d be pointing out on a loop that Obama made a deal with Iran, Trump cancelled it because Obama is Black, and then Trump started a war on the pretense there is no deal

Can’t say for sure, but something about eclecticism, bringing different discourses together in a new kind of intersectionality, is something I think about a lot creatively… which might be emergent? As in #emergentstrategy (speculation/action research)

Yes – because I recognize your suggestion above as directed towards someone who doesn’t know what to do. But for the people who know what to do, and or maybe knew it doing it or have been doing it for a long time: it hasn’t actually worked, historically. Only rarely, in exceptional cases.

I agree with you, but I don’t see how this actually moves the discourse forward into a new vector. What I mean is, we are also in our own small patterns of repetition, and we carry them into activism. Maybe the question is too abstract? What’s the *different* turn at critical junctures?

The U.S. is a country that is unable to handle death but is awash in it. A country with people who often can't process grief. These are terrible things.

I get that we need to understand the patterns revealed by observation. But once we understand those patterns, what can we do next?

I have a couple of these. One on disability studies (we’re not supposed to critique anything in the framing of the authors who made the call), and one management of language difference – in which I didn’t understand how badly they needed me to toe the line. (and, to be fair I fucked up the resubmit)

you can log on and encounter behavior on a *daily basis* that would instantly make someone a local pariah in 95% of real world contexts, and the fact that that percentage is lower than 99.99% is itself explained by the fact that we've been running this social experiment for years now

As I told my undergrads at the start of the semester, I'm not asking you to write a paper about Little Rock's school desegregation because I don't know what happened there.

Little Rock is just the topic. The act of researching, writing and editing the paper is the whole point.

The SAVE Act would make it tougher for people to vote - especially for folks who don’t have the money to get a passport, women who have changed their names after marriage or divorce, or for people who don’t have a copy of their birth certificates. Why? www.nytimes.com/video/opinio...

More of this, please. The folks in this grassroots group are heroes.

Haven Watch lives by the promise, β€œNo One Walks Alone.” Day or night, they show up. When people are released from ICE detention, volunteers meet them in the cold, disoriented, and exhausted.

Beautiful and devastating all at once.

Swiss Olympic bobsled commentator broke a century of neutrality and spent the entire run of the Israeli bobsled team recounting all the pro-genocide remarks and social media posts by Adam Edelman, one of the apartheid state athletes.

What NIH Staff Can’t Tell Youβ€”And Why That Matters The people who understand most clearly what is being lost at the NIH are also the people least able to say so.

β€œTaken together, these two policies create a structure in which dissent becomes professionally costly, alignment becomes professionally necessary, and the space for honest scientific judgment quietly contracts.”
