A day that involves multiple dictionaries and multiple style guides is a very good day indeed. #AmEditing

Mindset Shift: From Fear and Lack to Confidence and Abundance This week, I was challenged to think about a situation with a new mindset. My therapist pointed out my language indicated fear when, really, I was just feeling overwhelmed. Soon, my thoughts had sh…

How’s your mindset about your work right now? If a friend reached out and asked for an update, what’s the language you’d use? Does it stem from a place of fear and lack? Or, is it rooted in confidence & abundance?

I mentioned hiking, which has gotten some hate 🀣, but what I usually talk about is books and reading. It’s a personal thing that makes sense since I’m an editor and fellow readers love to talk books. πŸ“š #FreelanceFriends

Jumping in late to second this reply. I haven’t updated the About page on my website in a while. But I do like to share some personal things. One of the facts could stick in the client’s brainβ€”like, oh that’s the editor who loves to hike. #FreelanceFriends

Something Messy Is Happening: On AI, Panic, and Asking Better Questions Maybe you, like me, read Matt Shumer's viral piece about AI eliminating 50% of white-collar jobs in the next 1-5 years and maybe you, like me, thought… Oh. Isht.

Following up on the #FreelanceFriends conversation on AI, here is a thoughtful post from Ann Handley on avoiding panicking and why faster is not always better, especially in knowledge professions:

A hardback copy of The Story of a Heart lays on a white wooden table next to a cup of coffee

In The Story of a Heart, Rachel Clarke writes

πŸ“– β€œI have tried, in short, to write as complete an account as possible of the wonder and anguish, the science and soul, of a single heart in transit. This is Keira’s heart. And here is its story.” ❀️ ❀️

I think you can use Copilot in this way. But it isn't currently free in the Office365 subscription I have #FreelanceFriends

I use Perplexity to help me understand and break down some of the science in the papers I am editing. I only upload small bits of writing (usually 1 or 2 sentences), because of either copyright (for published journal articles) or confidentiality (grants or unpublished work) issues #FreelanceFriends

Yes, Grammarly also edits, but I think you can train or ground an LLM in ways that you can't with Grammarly. #FreelanceFriends

19.02.2026 17:31 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

In my limited experience, it takes longer (and thus costs the client MORE) to have a writer or editor rework a piece than to start from scratch because of the additional task of verifying everything the LLM comes up with. #FreelanceFriends

And also to help them paraphrase the wording in the papers they are citing. This is where problems arise, because they can end up with a paragraph of perfectly fine sentences that are not linked in any way. #FreelanceFriends

A1: My experience is similar to yours, Angela. I used to work with a lot of authors for whom English is a second language. Many are now using AI to edit their papers. #FreelanceFriends
