In 1920, the coal miners of West Virginia faced shameful living conditions, and even worse working conditions. The coal companies controlled everything in the remote towns, cut off from the rest of the world but for a single train line in and out of town. Access to housing, education, and doctors were fully governed by the companies. Despite high company profits, miners were paid subsistence wages, or even paid only in scrip which could only be used at the company-owned store. Within the mines themselves, workers experienced frequent cave-ins and other dangerous accidents, as the mine operators were reluctant to reduce production for the sake of safety.
When whispers of unionization began to start in the mountains, the coal companies responded harshly. They employed the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency and the Pinkerton Agency, and both groups were referred to as "company gun thugs" — mercenaries who violently and cruelly enacted the company's will upon the miners. In the spring of 1920, a group of Baldwin-Felts agents were sent to carry out an eviction. They were resisted by Sid Hatfield, the police chief of Matewan, WV. Events escalated from there, spiraling into the 1921 assassination of Sid Hatfield, who had by then become a local icon and a leader to the miners throughout the region.
The governor of West Virginia declared martial law in Mingo County due to the unrest. Miners from neighboring counties gathered in the thousands to march to "Bloody Mingo County" with the aim of liberating their compatriots. Many of the marchers were veterans of World War I, then known as the war to end all wars. In response, federal troops were dispatched to Blair Mountain, including aerial bombers equipped with leftover gas and explosive bombs from the Great War. Days of guerrilla warfare followed, during which as many as one hundred miners were killed for the crime of wanting a better life.
IV The miners were eventually forced to lay down their weapons and return to their homes. Nearly one thousand of them were arrested for treason in the days and weeks that followed. However, sympathetic juries led to few convictions, one mercy in the aftermath. Afterwards, the union was severely weakened in West Virginia, unable to negotiate for better conditions for the workers they represented. Over time, marginal improvements were made to ward off the worst of the dangers the miners faced, but the Battle of Blair Mountain was no victory for workers' rights. The fallout of the battle and the dominance of the coal companies are still felt to this day.
