"hah lol aren't the French weird and mean" as a British mindset is not a strong basis for getting strategic outcomes that the UK needs.
It also makes it easier for other EU member states when talking with the Brits to conveniently deflect blame on the French.
Sometimes wonder whether UK politics and policymaking towards the EU would improve markedly in quality and outcomes if more British diplomats and academics trained in the Oxbridge style followed UK MOD's lead CJEF lead in having to do a year working for French policy institutions in Paris

Anyone whoβs ever actually spoken to a single asylum seeker about their experiences in any country in Europe simply could not honestly conclude that what would improve things would be to further reduce their human rights protections.

In 1924, Calvin Coolidge's 16-yr-old son played tennis on the White House grounds w/o wearing socks. He got a blister and was dead from infection a week later.
This is unthinkable todayβwhich is why I wrote this series. Cuz the systems that save us from this kind of fate are in urgent need of care.

It's a promise to educate - yes - and to equip. But also to awaken; to kindle a flame that you hope will never go out ... Al might offer precision. One day, through headphones or brain implants, it may offer immediacy too. But speaking a foreign language tells your interlocutor that you are humble and committed enough to come into their world.

Critics of this proposal argue that the problem is not one of unsustainability but of under-resourcing. Language departments are easy targets because they tend to be relatively expensive to run, as they usually offer a large amount of contact hours and need comparatively high levels of staff. Yet the skills and intellectual rigour they foster are worth saving. As Hetan Shah, chief executive of the British Academy argues, we need to 'safeguard' our language provision: 'It would, for example, be geopolitically unwise to find ourselves without capable Russian or Chinese speakers. While it's easy to turn off the tap, it's much harder to turn it back on. Foreign language degrees may not be the most traditionally lucrative, but do we really want to be a society that knows the price of everything and the value of nothing?
Iβve been quoted in @thespectator1828.bsky.social about the importance of taking a strategic approach nationally to language provision as universities are making individual decisions to slash provision which may collectively be very bad for the national interest

The Starmer government has not produced an uptodate hate crime strategy (which last existed in 2016-2020) or a cohesion plan
If the government had an analysis of the causes/drivers of racism & hate crime Γ a strategy to respond, these comments could be more informed & sound less instrumental.
Tinkering with ECHR definitions will not help the government
The proposed changes to Articles 3 and 8 in asylum cases will achieve little or nothing

Worth remembering as this unfolds that it was disabled people and people from ethnic minority backgrounds who disproportionately died. Tens of thousands needlessly lost their lives, many who died alone or with just an iPad. Thousands more were left with life changing Long Covid. A true scandal.
