The ethical implications of this from long established principles are atrocious - from denial of consent and respect for persons and their wishes, to beneficence with a high rate of harm to the potential child and justice. This is a violation of all 3 Belmont principles of ethical medical care.

One of my axolotls will find and eat any food I give her. The other must be hand fed one morsel at a time, because she only eats things that smack her in the face at the precise moment she was pondering a lil snack anyway.

On a Nature news article reporting that NIH planned to suspend subawards for foreign collaborations:
"No, that's false. There's going to be a policy on tracking subawards. The NIH and the government should be able to see where the money's going."
"I'm really uncomfortable with this conversation, because you're like, actually spreading rumors that you don't know anything about. ... Nature also is spreading rumors. Halt foreign collaborations, that's not true."
"We're working on the policy, Jocelyn. You shouldn't be reporting rumors. I know there's leaks all over here, but the leaks don't actually reflect what's happening.
Don't write about rumors. It actually makes the things that you and I care about worse.
Like it spreads panic."
Later that day, NIH released a policy that halted future subawards to foreign scientists and said they will need to apply directly for money under a system still in development.

DNA-guided transcription factor interactions extend human gene regulatory code | Nature In the same way that the mRNA-binding specificities of transfer RNAs define the genetic code, the DNA-binding specificities of transcription factors (TFs) form the molecular basis of the gene regulatory code1,2. The human gene regulatory code is much more complex than the genetic code, in particular because there are more than 1,600 TFs that commonly interact with each other. TF–TF interactions are required for specifying cell fate and executing cell-type-specific transcriptional programs. Despite this, the landscape of interactions between DNA-bound TFs is poorly defined. Here we map the biochemical interactions between DNA-bound TFs using CAP-SELEX, a method that can simultaneously identify individual TF binding preferences, TF–TF interactions and the DNA sequences that are bound by the interacting complexes. A screen of more than 58,000 TF–TF pairs identified 2,198 interacting TF pairs, 1,329 of which preferentially bound to their motifs arranged in a distinct spacing and/or orienta

Transcription factors (1,600+ TFs) intricately shape human gene regulation, exceeding the complexity of the genetic code through crucial TF-TF interactions. PMID:40205063, Nature 2025, @Nature https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-025-08844-z #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG πŸ§ͺ

If they can ship Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a foreign prisonβ€”accused of no crime, with no trialβ€”they can do it to anyone.

Americans of conscience must stand against this now.

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

We need to trust our eyes.

Nazi salutes, racist purges, an ambush on the Ukrainian president by a far-right regime. If what we see aligns with what we know and is also in line with an established track record, our default assumption should be that what is happening is actually what it looks like.
