Theory Thursdays is back!
Today we're reading Koster et al., 2026: The Roles of Conspiracy Theories and Political Participation on Justifying Violence in the Capitol Hill Riots
Information in post.
π Weekly Schedule - 2-8 March 2026 (all times UTC+0) π
Unfortunately I won't be able to stream much due to personal obligations, but the stream is a good one!!!
π Saturday 7th at 17:00: Room reviews with @myelinachemon.bsky.social!! Can you make two psychologists say "wow bro you live like that?"
This is consistent with earlier psychometric work that suggests 5-7 is the best response scale options, but good to see that the finding holds up in contemporary research. Also, good to see that labeling scales whether anchored or not has little impact on findings. academic.oup.com/ijpor/articl...

Is Nursing a STEM discipline?
This argument has become a point of contention in academic circles, labor, & policy creation. Why is this recognition important?
Let's talk this Saturday, 2/28 with @dr-ekelus.bsky.social' 2026 Science Vtuber Symposium! Event starts at 6pm EST. See you there!

The Big 5 test is about twice as accurate as the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator for predicting life outcomes, placing the usefulness of the MBTI test halfway between science and astrology.
Any psychologist will tell you, the Meyers-Briggs is mostly bullshit.

Social Identities Shape Belief in True & False Information
In our new paper (N=1,459), people randomly assigned to a minimal groups were more likely to trust + believe ingroup members. This was only true among people who valued their ingroup or had a strong need to belong.

Living with a partner was roughly as beneficial as exercise.

Trust in leadership is essential to success
A new study found that PhD students who had greater trust in their graduate advisor finished their first year more motivated, higher in well-being, and more academically successful than those with lower advisor trust.

When I was an undergrad I saw who I thought was my teacher in the dining hall. So I went up to him and said "hi," and he said "Oh. No. I'm not your teacher. I'm his twin. I'm a graduate student in a different department."
and to this day I don't know if he was telling the truth
