24.07.2025 17:05 โ ๐ 76 ๐ 15 ๐ฌ 8 ๐ 0the "stop doing math" meme except it says "STOP DRIVING CARS". the meme reads: * PEOPLE WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ISOLATED IN CAGES * YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND for building ONE MORE LANE * Wanted to travel large distances anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: It was called "TRAINS" * "Yes please give me NO GREENERY. Please give me INFINITE PAVEMENT" - Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged LOOK at what Civil Engineers have been demanding your Respect for all this time, with all the concrete and asphalt we built for them (This is REAL Civil Infrastructure, done by REAL Civil Engineers): ? [Image of the infamously hideous Breezewood truck stop] ?? [Image of a gigantic mega parking lot with thousands of cars] ??? [Image of the infamous I-405 gridlock photo with tens of thousands of cars not moving] "Hello I would like [Image of a graph of global surface temperatures] climate please" They have played us for absolute fools

Me aged 30. I was in LA and dressed up to go to a posh do (hired tux). My hair is slicked back and, in black and white under bright Californian sun, my skin looks impeccable. Iโm looking directly into the camera with a closed mouth smile. I look like a movie star.
Selfie. Iโve got very freshly cut hair and Iโm looking directly at the camera with a similar smile. Iโm wearing a vest. My lines are deeper, my eyes heavier, but Iโm still in pretty good shape for a 57 year old.
I was diagnosed with HIV in 1998, when I was 30.
Many of my friends had died but I was told, with the new drugs available, I could expect to live another 20 years.
That was 27 years ago.
Honour those we lost.
Celebrate that we can now treat and prevent HIV.
Make HIV stigma history.

In my undergrad, my cell biology lecturer showed us a picture of Krebs' cycle.

Word of the day is โlibrocubicularistโ: one who loves nothing better than reading in bed.
(Not easy to say, but Iโm glad to know it exists).
I love Ian Hislop but itโs worth noting that most of us would balk at the prospect of publicly admonishing a wrongdoer whose conduct you condemn in this way. I did it once to the UKIP/Reform/Brexit twerp Richard Tice but that took exactly zero guts.
This is speaking truth to actual powerโฆ
At the end of a badly bruising week for UKHE, a reminder that even when measured in the narrowest economic terms, UK universities are stonkingly good value for money. 2021-22 for example saw a return on government investment in 1st degree students' teaching of ยฃ13 for every ยฃ1 spent. Great piece on AI for writing. Particularly agree about pointless forms: "Whatโs not worth doing isnโt worth doing well."
It's the flipside of how I feel on reading AI prose when I want a human: Why should I bother to read it if you couldn't be bothered to write it? substack.com/home/post/p-...
