This is a colonial term that defines the region by its geographical position relative to its European colonizers. Rather than being an accurate descriptor, it perpetuates colonial ways of thinking. The term SWANA (South-West Asia and North Africa) offers a decolonial alternative, although it also has its pitfalls (such as grouping the many diverse cultures of the region under one label). Be mindful when using the word "Levant" to get around this issue - while many people in the region identify with it, it's French in origin and dates back to the French colonial conquest of the region.
