This Time It’s Aliens: When Interstellar Objects Are Mislabeled as Alien Spacecraft Image of 3I/ATLAS captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. A mysterious interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, is hurtling through our solar system at 58.0 km/s. It’s only the third visitor from outside our…

3I/ATLAS is the latest instance of an interstellar object being mislabeled as an alien spaceship, but it’s not the first. I wrote about the history of this phenomenon, and the disproportionate media attention placed on such speculations. #Astronomy

The Perseids were the first meteor shower I ever saw. My grandmother got up around 4am to take me to the golf course to get a clear view of the night sky. Very fond memories.

We'll get to observe it more closely as it gets closer to us, but sadly we can't launch a probe fast enough to catch it.

All of the evidence points to 3I/ATLAS being a comet. Its got a solid nucleus surrounded by a cloud, like a comet. We've detected water in its composition, like a comet.

3I/ATLAS is very exciting, unfortunately the closest it's going to get to Earth is ~167 million miles away. Don't get your hopes up about meeting aliens.
