I've had a quick test and so far the issue around drawing molecules and things like bonding diagrams etc remains.

AI is impressive but where chemistry is concerned, it struggles in the most essential aspects.

What we see is overgeneralisation from a specific example, a classic example of poor thinking and reasoning that we warn our students about all the time.

I find it interesting that early in the document they say research invades free speech and expression and then basically says we will now invade free thinking in the NSF, arguing that that too much research is 'woke'.

International PhD scholarship round for 2026 is open at ANU. Aspiring scholars with Masters degree, or equivalent (eg Australia/NZ Hons), interested in computational chemistry, quantum information, molecular spins, vibronic coupling, or something in that vein - get in touch!

Once upon a time, two science journalists had an idea for a blog about retractions. And on Aug. 3, 2010, Retraction Watch launched.

And now, 15 years and 6,700 posts later, that work seems more important than ever.

Happy 15th anniversary, Retraction Watch.

I can imagine this being a fun way for students to do some basic DFT in their UG studies.

From @apoethig.bsky.social,‬ [2]rotaxanes with enhanced reactivity (@jacs.acspublications.org).

These rotaxanes were shown to deprotect faster compared to non-interlocked structures due to conformational preorganisation.

I don't get it either. One of the most fulfilling parts of the job is seeing that spark in the students' eyes when they understand something for the 1st time.

This is such a great idea. I wish we could do more of this in Thailand.

But I need a new diffy first. The unis current one is about 20 years old and dead (no parts made anymore).

If memory serves NiCp2 is also 20-electron although it does slip into the eta-3 conformation in solution if memory serves.

But I still like the new compound and it's chemistry is really interesting.

This is a problem with all educational systems. They are built for 'normal' students.

A bit of both. Obviously, previous work with compounds that are generally monoclinc and then suddenly it's orthorhombic often leads to warning bells going off in my head!

I've had a few structures like this where the software is trying to go orthorhombic, but I can see it's really monoclinic.
