May the topsoil be light on him.

After all, central Italy, unlike many other parts of the Mediterranean, had no prior experience with settlements bigger than 1-2 ha. There was no template or paradigm to follow. Rome in particular is very illustrative of the tentative and progressive nature of the process.

Building on our Iron Age results at gabiiproject.org, I argued that key decisions in the zoning of these centers were taken quite late, centuries after their first occupation.
We need to consider that graveyards, fortifications and cult places had newly become communal to the whole settlement

2024-2025 Shaping Spaces The shaping of space can be conceived by way of buildings and other physical means that altered, directed and carved the environment. It also involves far more (and more complex) proโ€ฆ

Was delighted to be recently invited to the 2024 Larissa Bonfante workshop, whose theme was Shaping Spaces.

My paper was on "Zoning decisions in early central Italian urbanism". I tried to reflect in a non-teleological way on how areas were defined in early cities.
