This is how they do it now. They start with an egregious and hateful sentiment *pretending* to be a joke, to get it into the public sphere as innocuously as they can, swearing they don’t mean it, and slowly (or quickly in these media cycles) it becomes clear they mean it. Thus the frog is boiled.
