The whole point of Heated Rivalry is that these men love a sport that doesn't love them. Then y'all are like "I can't believe they let Kash Patel hang out in the locker room!" I can't believe that you got all the way to the cottage and didn't understand why they had to hide there in the first place.

Like the implication is that any romance outside of the norm is wrong and dirty. There are already terms for romances that feature kink or noncon. So it kind of feels like people are using the term "clean" because they haven’t sat with their unconscious bias against queer or poly romances.

I know "don't yuck anyone's yum". But the term "clean romance" implies that there's "dirty" romance. What I've found is that this term doesn't mean "romance with consent only". It means, "a narrow definition of acceptable romances that are cis, hetero, and monogamous".

I love the terms "open door" and "closed door" romance. It does what it says on the tin. You either get to see the deed or you don't. But I've seen a rise in the term "clean romance". As a queer poly writer who writes stories inspired by my own community and experience, the phrase gives me the ick.

Not to be totally brain rotted, but I wonder if this is part of the reason behind Heated Rivarly's massive success. It's a rejection of this style and opts for a low budget show that focuses on intimate human relationships. There's little spectacle outside of the hockey and well other activities.

Kind of puts a damper on the whole Nancy Meyers vibe you know?
