text that says “every human being has inherent worth and dignity” on a green background
We could no more ask for a bomb to be dropped on our fellow man nor propose they die by scalpel, vacuum, and forceps before birth if we recognized their inherent dignity. If we understood them as being like ourselves, we would not wish them ill; we could only work for peace.

The Children of Hiroshima
by Sarah Terzo—On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. Two hundred forty-seven thousand people, over half the city’s population, were killed. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. In 1951, Japanese professor Arata Osada compiled the testimonies of children who survived. In 1980, they were translated and published in the United States. The following quotes are from some of the children.Witnessing burned and injured peopleHiroaki Ichikawa was five

City in Flames: One Hiroshima Survivor’s Story
The Hiroshima bombing through the eyes of a child
"[T]here was a sudden, terrific flash, and we were all blown to the ground. There was a deep yellow light around us which was so strong that we couldn’t open our eyes. ‘It’s hot!’ I cried and tightly covered my face with both hands."

Was the Bombing of Hiroshima Justified?
The war with Japan could have ended without it
"With his knowledge of communications between Japan and the Soviet Union, Truman was aware that Japan wanted an end to the war and was open to more negotiations."

A blurred image of people protesting in front of the White House. White text superimposed on the photo reads: "Vigil to End the Nuclear Danger. Saturday, August 9, 10:0am-12:00pm, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington DC. Come join Consistent Life Network, the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House of Washington, DC, and more allied groups in remembering those lost to nuclear violence. We testify to the destruction of nuclear war, and advocate for a day when the threat is no longer posed to human life." The Consistent Life Network logo (a white infinity symbol with a broad middle stroke and thinner end strokes) is in the bottom right corner.
Next weekend is our quarterly Vigil to End the Nuclear Danger. In a special way, we are remembering the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.

Edward’s death sentences were the product of two simple majority votes (7-5 each) plus a judge’s override of a jury’s life verdict. In no other state in the nation, including under Florida’s current law, would Edward even be eligible for execution. actionnetwork.org/petitions/st...

a poem from Hiroshima survivor Tamiki Hara:
The strange rhythm of the human bodies,
Inflamed and red,
That mingle with the glaring wrecks
And the cinders of grayish white
In the vast panorama —
Is this all that has happened, or is it
what could have happened?
Oh, the world stripped of all in an
instant
How the swollen belly of the horse
Glares beside the toppled streetcar.
And the stench of the smoldering wires!
This August marks the 80th anniversary of the first (and hopefully only) use of nuclear weapons in war.
The suffering witnessed by survivors like Tamiki Hara must not be repeated.
