We could no more ask for a bomb to be dropped on our fellow man nor propose they die by scalpel, vacuum, and forceps before birth if we recognized their inherent dignity. If we understood them as being like ourselves, we would not wish them ill; we could only work for peace.

a poem from Hiroshima survivor Tamiki Hara:

The strange rhythm of the human bodies,
	Inflamed and red,
That mingle with the glaring wrecks
And the cinders of grayish white
In the vast panorama —
Is this all that has happened, or is it
	what could have happened?
Oh, the world stripped of all in an
	instant
How the swollen belly of the horse
Glares beside the toppled streetcar.
And the stench of the smoldering wires!

This August marks the 80th anniversary of the first (and hopefully only) use of nuclear weapons in war.

The suffering witnessed by survivors like Tamiki Hara must not be repeated.
