I really appreciate this TikToker with Tourette syndrome, Shay, for taking the time to educate so many of us (including me) about her disability and coprolalia in light of what happened at the BAFTAs with John Davidson when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.
I learned a lot.
This need of old white men in particular produces a ridiculous, problematic, frustrating, and hurtful situation.
The more marginalized you are, the greater incentive you have to do something. Old white men's incentive is minimal.
This produces yet more hurt, in a spiral of hurt. What a shitshow.
It is startling and bizarre how there is such a radical lack of teaching about racism, social dynamics, kindness, and how entrenched these racist structures are to produce beings who seem to have genuine difficulty at actingβ¦human, and kind.
Maybe someone must teach John Davidson how to handle this
In the case I supported, the harm was clear and there was no tourette syndrome that would have externalized the hurt. Just an old white dude using a slur.
He wanted to apologize. I had to split-screen in and word-by-word them through it and stop them from using more slurs; they where willing.
Another thing: I personally forced old white men who used slurs publicly to apologize on the same public channel where they used the slurs.
Old white men have no clue at all how to handle a situation like that. Nobody taught them; they are completely inept. Gross failure of socialization.
Tics happen to you, they are not something you do. It is soul-crushing to take responsibility β to apologize β for something that is not a thing you did.
This is different from acknowledging harm though; harm can be acknowledged without positioning yourself as someone who has to apologize.
This video is extremely spot-on and accurate.
There is great wisdom in how Jumaane Williams calls for the context, for BAFTA, to do more to educate and contextualize the hurt-filled events of the ceremony.
I also appreciate how he calls for Davidson to comment, without asking him to apologize.
I do think there is hurt and injury here, but I do not think that a victims/perpetrator dichotomy applies here neatly. There may be only gravely injured here.
It is a matter of joined community leadership to organize a communal experience that restores a sense of safety for all injured.
If I tic something like "Naga" or "Norden", I just redirected. I am extremely lucky to be good at redirection.
Even with redirection, it whips me into an anxious frenzy, making me have even more tics and and making me behave thoughtlessly, and awkwardly.
My brain is just otherwise occupied.
This scenario is my tourette anxiety number one.
Tics that are slurs or otherwise extremely hurtful are the tics I suppress or redirect hardest. Sometimes my tourette is "hey, whats the most hurtful thing to shout right now" and its incredibly, indescribably exhausting to mentally filter these.

Hi. I am a cryptographer and I am more worried about data loss than about being surveilled most of the time. I wager, that in this, I am like most people.
All of the high-security tools I use, do not account for that. As cryptographers and system designers, we failed our users in that sense.
If you can not imagine a bright future, start practicing. Hope and faith are mental skills, like anything else.
