Ehhh, not so much "sprawled across the whole internet" - chatrooms and forums are that, too. But I feel like Twitter mainstreamed that immediacy of global communication in a way the AOLs and CompuServes of the world did before broadband.

Yeah, exactly. That was the core appeal of Twitter when I first joined. All the fun of online forums or chatrooms, but sprawled across the whole internet. Great way to meet people, make friends, share interests. That's the good shit.

More than that even: Actively engaging too heavily with the worldslop that surfaces on platforms like this has a (provably!) deleterious mental health impact. I don't want that for myself or anyone else!

I lived inside a social media firehose for the 5+ years I was weekend editor during my 7 years at Mashable. So while I'm as susceptible to doomscrolling and emotion-driven soapboxing as anyone, I also believe deep down, philosophically that these simply aren't and never were good platforms for that.

This is a great articulation of something I think about pretty much every morning when I plug back into the dreamscape/hellscape that is social media

Feeling good -- what a concept!

Things are awful in the world but I got to work on really cool, tangibly valuable stuff this week with some amazing people and I feel pretty damn good about that

While I'm sitting here posting unpopular opinions:

The human cost in the ongoing consolidation of media (or any industry!) is terrible. But the fascists tearing apart CNN, which traded journalistic excellence for takes and loud talking heads ages and ages ago, has some real "let them fight" energy.

I don't like most of genAI's practical implementations so far. Hell, I resigned from an entire job *in this economy* largely because of ethical issues & their knock-on mental health impacts.

Idk man, there's gotta be a better way to handle this kind of thing. GenAI will continue to exist, you know?

'Spitting in the face of your international audience': The Alters cops to using generative AI for background text and translations, despite not disclosing such on Steam AI-ters.

I feel like The Alters got particularly hosed because of timing. What dev did in that game was no worse than the genAI crap that has come out about two successive COD games, Clair Obscur, and Fortnite, none of which have been excommunicated from critical discourse the way The Alters has.

This reminded me how excited I was to dig into The Alters before the genAI stuff came out. I really enjoy Nate's work (The Axis Unseen SLAPS) and will probably now fire up the game when I get home because of this rec.
