I think the only reason this question is even asked is a messed puritanical idea that you can only be good if you are being self-sacrificing and self-denying, that for others to gain you must lose.

But in my theology (and experience) helping others in the best ways also helps oneself, & vice versa.

This is a place I find Kant helpful — totally fine to benefit as long as the others you are helping are also valued as an End in themselves, not merely as a means to you helping yourself.

We absolutely have to sharpen our habits of skepticism - just because “a study says” doesn’t mean jack all. What was the study and how did it work? Did it work? Who funded it? are its conclusions credible? Is it being applied properly?

You forgot the environmental degradation, too! And the psychosis! Really there are a lot of reasons. But your points about credulity and critical thinking are so important — this is such an important time to brush up on our skepticism muscles, esp towards claims *about* “AI” as much as from “AI.”

We all came later than others would have liked to our politics and activism. And yet, they need you and you need them! I’m eternally grateful for the grace and discipline of organizers who welcomed me in for the sake of transformation and winning.
