Movies! I love movies! Especially Indian movies! Especially Malayalam language movies!
Aside: I cannot tell you how much I love this movie.

11.08.2025 17:08 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Oh, that is definitely not aimed at someone like you. More, a subset of "experts" who aren't terribly discerning, they're just spinning this falsehood that every film out of the industry is a gem. Great track record, yes. Also make rubbish films (like every industry).

(And also note my frustration with westerners who view Malayalam cinema as an exception, as special and every film a gem. Will they realize that things are more subtle than this? I can hope.)

I think it's really interesting to consider what films Malayalees like/don't like -- see Marakkar as an example -- and how my tastes generally align (after so many years of watching). www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xKZ... #DesiWatch

Yup. Some people get old gracefully and use their clout to raise up a younger generation. And then there's Adoor, old man shaking his fist at a cloud. Sigh.

04.08.2025 16:04 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0The thing is, these films don't get wide distribution, if any distribution at all. They rarely turn up on regular streaming services. Where they are? CSpace, the Kerala government's PPV streaming platform. www.cspace.tv

04.08.2025 15:46 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0This is an example of one of the Toronto area cinemas (the others are the York and the Woodside, all owned by the same people). I grew up in this part of Toronto, when I lived there it was part of the Cineplex chain, then it was bought out to bring in Indian films. www.albioncinema.ca
04.08.2025 03:02 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0There's a group near where I live that brings in Malayalam and occasionally Tamil movies -- they rent out a rep theatre. Again, more expensive tickets than a chain cinema, and also really terrible times, as they're trying to work around the films the rep theatre is already showing.
04.08.2025 02:59 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0In Toronto region, there are a group of cinemas that only screen Indian movies -- though they can also be rented out by groups who manage to get the rights to screen the film. You'll find that the ticket prices are really expensive (I've seen $25 or more for a ticket) in that case.
04.08.2025 02:58 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0When it goes to streaming, it's likely to be on an Indian streamer, maybe Zee5.
04.08.2025 01:17 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I really think it's a distribution thing. It's well known that Netflix refuses to buy the rights for Kannada films, and I think unless you have a substantial Kannada speaking community, it's less likely to see a film brought in (often community groups do that).
04.08.2025 01:16 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I just checked the Toronto area theatre that only show Indian films and it’s there. But they’re also gearing up for some bigger films. And Kannada films don’t get great distribution.
