I used to always flat blacks in my comics and illustrations and I got away from that for the first few series of Knucklejelly to help meet my deadlines faster. I’m adding them back in these last two issues because these issues have a lot of gravitas and I want to draw like this again.

I heard that Mignola draws from reference in his sketchbook and then references his studies when drawing the final illustration to keep his backgrounds more rooted in his style. Here’s a bunch of rock formation studies I did hoping for the same result in Knucklejelly.

Not believing the people that tell you they love your work is a disservice to them. You are worthy of adoration. No matter the quality you see in your own work, you are able to experience and communicate with your art in a way that millions can’t. Never stop.

Some things that work for me: Everyone is on their own journey and no one’s journey is the same.
Accept and appreciate where you are in your journey in the same way you can appreciate other’s journeys.

I could talk for hours about the informal mentor system that helped me survive in comics for 30 years, but what I really need to say is this --
