A European Nuthatch stands on the horizontal edge of a monument in a dark churchyard. The left hand side of the monument, the bird itself, and the yew fronds behind it, are all angled diagonally across the frame, top left to bottom right. The Nuthatch is a small bird with a grey-blue back and wings, and orange underparts. Its face is white and it has a black stripe running horizontally from the top of its bill, through its eye and along onto the top of its shoulder. Its legs are pale and its narrow, pointed beak is black.

Long ago, when the world was still learning the language of color, there lived a young woman who loved the sun. Each morning she stood at the edge of the prairie and lifted her arms to the light, whispering thanks for its warmth, its courage, its unbroken path across the sky. The people said her devotion was so pure that one day, the Great Spirit took pity on her longing and transformed her into a tall, golden flower, her face forever turned toward the sun’s path. When the seasons changed and her seeds scattered, they took root in open meadows and river valleys. Some grew tall and strong with bright yellow petals and dark yellow cores, and became the sunflowers, the eldest children of her spirit. Others stayed closer to the earth, their blossoms smaller but countless, glowing like golden dust on the wind. These became the goldenrods, her gentle kin. Together they bloom each autumn, side by side, covering the fields in stunning shades of gold. Even now, as the air cools and shadows lengthen, the memories of their brilliance linger in the seeds that are scattered, or that feed the wildlife in the meadows, and that will whisper the brilliance of the blossoms down to the next generation.
