Thanks to @scotfire_glasgo for extremely helpful briefings today about what it’s taking to fight a particularly complex fire. When their work is complete, responsibility for the site will pass to @GlasgowCC & I’ve been meeting our teams throughout the day to plan next steps

This is another reminder of just how important Glasgow city centre is to Scotland’s national life. It has no equivalent in terms of economic & cultural impact. Ensuring a swift recovery & longer term restoration must be a priority for all levels of government in the weeks ahead

I’m extremely grateful to the @GlasgowCC staff & all the others who worked through the night and of course to @scotfire_glasgo firefighters, without whose efforts this could have been even worse. Please give all these professionals the space they need to do their jobs

Thankful there are no casualties but it’s very upsetting to see the damage the major fire has caused to the heart of Glasgow city centre. The priorities of all those working at and behind the scene are keeping everyone safe and supporting those immediately affected

A Safe Consumption Facility is just the start of a story and we’ve all got a lot more work to do to turn around Scotland’s relationship with drugs. But in opening a service today that replaces criminalisation with care and stigma with dignity, we’ve taken a massive step forward.

It’s been a long & complex road to this moment, which has taken tenacity & courage on the part of many: dedicated professionals, people with lived experience of addiction & family members, & politicians especially Cllr Allan Casey, who has been tireless in working towards this day
