Going to take a break from social media for a while I think. I can only handle seeing people calling for people like me to be gagged or locked up just for existing before it starts to destroy my mental health.
Maybe one day people can start seeing us as humans but I've lost all hope in for that now.

Trying hard not to be conspiratorial but part of me wonders if it's "oh crap black people AND disabled people were about to get more understanding and respect... gotta put a stop to that" on behalf of the BBC.

Exactly, and it's very much not helped by the way people phrase things. As hard and painful as I know it must be people really need to think of it as the word was uttered by a force of nature and not a person because quite frankly that's what Tourette's is.

Yep, being a trans woman with 2 extremely stigmatised disabilities has been really fun for me the last few years (:

That's the fear I have too, which makes it even more wild the amount of times I see the "muzzle them" sentiment from people with a trans flag in their bio, like do you think "keep the undesirables away from me" would stop at people with "icky disabilities"?

Obligatory obviously horrible to have to hear racist slurs. Sometimes forces of natures suck and it's nobody's fault but society/culture at large.

Maybe this is too on the nose but idk, people seem to be fine with gagging disabled people so I'm not sure I care about seeing those people as fascists

You know what I'm done being nice so I've come up with a solution for everyone saying we should be gagged if we dare leave our homes. We could all start wearing a black triangle so you know to avoid us, then we can exist in public and you know to stay away

/s OBVIOUSLY but ffs I'm sick of this shit

THREAD #BAFTAS #TOURETTES

1/ As a 34yo with treatment resistant, severe Tourette’s and coprolalia, I’d like to throw my hat into the ring here regarding the BAFTA incident. Let me first say that I think we should be listening to black people when they talk about their experiences with that word.

25.02.2026 23:15 — 👍 7    🔁 3    💬 1    📌 1

I've barely seen people suggesting people with tourette's shouldn't apologise when we cause harm, we've just been too busy dealing with the "people with tourette's should be muzzled or beaten for something we can't control".
Also the word was not shouted AT anybody, that word implies intent.

26.02.2026 00:24 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Please explain how the "forced to say things you don't believe" condition makes it harder to hide racism. Tics are not in any way a reflection of a person's character or beliefs.

25.02.2026 17:20 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I've been saying it for years, people only care about accessibility until accessibility requires them actually doing something. They don't care about us they just want to do the bare minimum to be able to go back to pretending we don't exist.

25.02.2026 17:03 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Something else to add to the set up - If I'm at an event and see a hot mic in front of me you bet your ass I'd be anxious as hell of having a bad tic... and that would make the tic more harder to stop.
This strikes me as BBC: "we want to say the n word to black people but need plausible deniability"

25.02.2026 17:01 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I don't get what logic people try to imply with that, do they think I WANT to try and snap my neck 50+ times a day? The mental gymnastics is ridiculous.

As a side note because I'm sure there will be some who say his apology here isn't an apology - fuck off with your tone policing and insisting an apology only counts if it's the exact phrasing you demand. I'm sick of people insisting ND people translate everything we say to make things easier for you

Hopefully with this we can stop the ableism towards people with Tourette's now, Davidson did nothing wrong (his tics did but he didn't - important distinction) and he apologised for the incident.

25.02.2026 16:23 — 👍 4    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

It's almost like if people with the power of agency of their actions had listened this could have been avoided or at least mitigated but no the BBC made a conscious decision to be racist AND ableist.

He did what he could to mitigate the impact of his tics and apologised for them causing harm.

Anything but taxing the ultra rich huh -.-

Black person with Tourette’s here, hi 👋🏽

- Tourette’s is NOT a “white-only” condition

- Tics are NOT voluntary

- Tics can be ANY word, phrase or movement

- Tics are NOT a reflection of inner thought

- Having unrelated disabilities does NOT mean you speak for Black Touretters

Given our current options absolutely not lol

24.02.2026 23:58 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Anyone claiming that the n word being said at the BAFTA wasn't harmful to black people is a jackass.

All of these "debates" that we're having now are tired discussions that have already been had repeatedly, and it's unfair that we need to keep having them because ignorant bigots refuse to learn.

24.02.2026 20:46 — 👍 1    🔁 1    💬 0    📌 0

How about instead of a fight between fascists and turbo fascists we go green and vote in a progressive government for a change

24.02.2026 23:29 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Of course I am! All those propagandists told me so!

/s obviously

24.02.2026 23:06 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Absolutely. I've been mostly focused on the Tourette's part because that's my lane but obviously it's a bad situation all round for everybody. This whole thing is just "don't pull out your pitchforks on someone being forced to do something terrible that they had no control over"

24.02.2026 23:04 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

You know, just incase all you ableist asshats think your misinformation and ignorance on the topic isn't harmful.

24.02.2026 22:35 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Something fun I haven't added to this conversation yet. I have an anxiety based mutism condition where my brain won't let me speak. It was caused because of all the abuse I got for having Tourettes and the abject terror of ever being heard. Ive been slowly recovering but this stuff is what caused it

24.02.2026 22:35 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

The "listen to minorites and don't talk over them when they tell your their experiences" crowd seems to be awfully keen on talking over and not listening to people with Tourette's right now. And people wonder why disabled people don't trust non-disabled people to be true allies.

24.02.2026 22:14 — 👍 10    🔁 4    💬 0    📌 1

I wish I could full on practice it but yay disabilities, I will however absolutely cheer you all on while you practice it and help where I'm able to

24.02.2026 21:24 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

With the government trying to criminalise kink I guess they just really want me to be me as a bad girl for them

(sorry I couldn't resist)

24.02.2026 21:12 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Love how all this has made my tics worse and more frequent, really hoping my brain doesn't latch on to a certain word that everybody keeps bringing up because knowing a word means I agree with it even though it wouldn't if I didn't have tourettes APPARENTLY. >.>

24.02.2026 21:09 — 👍 5    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

So fun fact for some it technically can be possible, I've managed to redirect harmful tics... It resulted in them becoming a much louder scream and nearly breaking my wrist from my brain desperately latching on to any other tic it could use but seems some people would prefer that outcome.
