These are their recommendations to increase both scientific rigor and the societal impact of psych gene research.
1. Create specific community engagement grants for genetics and genomics
2. Form an empowered stakeholder advisory board/steering committee @ NIMH
3. Have people w/ LE have more involvement in the strategic planning process
4. Require that people with LE are part of any research
People with LE have historically been excluded from meaningful participation in psych gene research, despite being directly affected by its goals and outcomes. The authors argue that NIMH, the largest funder of MH research worldwide, recommend 5 key changes to start correcting this.
