What are some art things youβre struggling with and would like advice on?
I might not always be able to help but I do like challenges, so please let me know! I might even draw something when I try to explain stuff

Managed to muster up some energy and scan my sketchbooks. I have too many ideas and projects at the same time, so most are progressing slower than I want xD
But Iβm also trying to be kind to myself since work is a bit rough at the moment.

There will be more sketches! Just need to scan more pages xD has been too hectic at work the past weeks, but maybe I can get to it today πͺ

25.07.2025 19:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The layout frames the road/middle a lot. It would be really nice with a small story, like a person stopping to pet a cat, placed there that we can focus on :)
24.07.2025 15:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Itβs difficult to explain π« I always work on them together, just like I draw the full page spread in the thumbnails. It helps my overview. Other things I take into account are: - Proportions and contact points. (Ex: When she sits I want her body/clothes to be affected.) Both of these also helps make the character fit into the background . - If the character blends in with the background, check the contrast: dark vs light, colors, shape language and detail levels. I do like the common thing in manga where backgrounds sometimes are super detailed so the simpler characters stand out. But you can also just avoid to connect background lines to the character lines.

21.07.2025 19:45 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I had to take some time to think before answering this one. Itβs something I havenβt thought too much about so great question! Iβll try to explain myself and then I have my comic process as images that I hope can help. I usually start with the characters and then add backgrounds to help the story 1. I work with iterations, so I never aim to get everything correct in my first draft. So for backgrounds in iteration 1, they are kept very simple, focusing on the shapes. 2. I then correct things as I iterate further, giving myself feedback and notes. Honing in on the purpose of the background, itβs not just there to tell the location. I want to use it to help with: - Composition - visual flow - Mood - Visual storytelling - clues to the bigger story
Some examples from the comic Iβm working on: No background in the first panels, the back will instead extend from panel 3. Gives more focus early on. I want the bloody sword to do all the lifting. It also helps the last panel on page 1, having a dark/heavy top pushing my character down. = mood! But when I did my second pass I also added the sun ray above the character to frame her. I also made her smaller, to make the ocean look bigger/stronger. But I did keep the log quite small to make her still look like a tall character. Page 2 have similar things, but also that the sand in panel 1 pushes the flow to the next panel. Then the next panel has a lot of horizontal lines but the character is vertical = stands out and makes her opposite to the sea in a visual way.
My answer:

I got a good question from Tumblr.

18.07.2025 10:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Definitely a learning curve to accept βbadβ art. To help me with this early on I used cheap paper and pens I canβt erase and a timer.
Then when itβs βbadβ I can blame the short time and that I canβt erase mistakes. Plus you just draw the ugly thing again and again.
Here are some examples:

This helps even before I start so I can mentally prepare.
It is good to just draw for fun! The need to get better can become draining, especially if you do it because you feel pressured to do so, instead of wanting it yourself.
But if you want to get better, practice mode is my recommendation!
